#BackupU google+ hangout TODAY

Greg Schulz (aka @storageio) and I have been running a series of online webinars and Google+ Hangouts called BackupU for about 18 months. The idea came to me as I started my role as the product marketing manager for AppAssure — I noticed none of us in the backup and recovery portion of the tech community just *tell* people what we do– and I am definitely including my org in this group.

It’s what Greg calls buzzword bingo, and trust me if you ever talk to him in person never mention buzzword bingo – he knows them all. 🙂 We had talked about starting a buzzword bingo section on the Backup.U wiki over on the Dell Tech Center – would anyone be up for helping us build it?

BackupU was made to just discuss and educate folks on the practice of backing up, restoring, and archiving your data. No vendor talk, no product talk. Just how does this stuff actually WORK?  Please come and join us!

Here’s the link to the Google+ hangout happening today (Tuesday, Nov 11 at noon central). Come share your challenges with managing your backups. In today’s hangout we’ll talk about what happened at Dell World, quickly review what we’ve talked about in previous webinars, and in particular continue the conversation about data protection management tools and strategies (that recorded webinar is here).

Here’s our “set list”, although we do tend to go wherever the conversation takes us during the hangouts. See you at noon!

  • What happened at Dell World
  • What have we been talking about during the summer semester
  • DPM review:
    • What approach to use
    • When to use full, incremental, etc (or block!)
    • How long to retain copies (true old school archiving)
    • How to use versions with replication
    • Cost of protection vs insurance
      • Speed to backup v speed to restore
      • Space savings v performance
